Mamegi-Daishi


The origin of the Mamegi-Daishi.

The Ganjo temple(Kujira-Daishi) was installed in Kushima-island by priest Kobo-daishi.
It was Okuno-in as branch of Kanjizai-temple(The 40th temple where Kobo-daishi installed it in Shikoku) in Ainan-town.
It worshiped very inconvenience, because there was in island.
Therefore it was changed to here Mottoigi. And it had been called Mottoigi-Ganjo temple.
This temple has been become an Okuno-in of Ryukoin temple since the Meiji Period.


The origin of the name Mamegi-Daishi

The Kujira-Daishi was installed, but it worshiped very inconvenience. Therefore it changed to this place where it was seashore at that time.
And Kobo-Daishi rested the branch of oak in front of this new temple. After a while, the branch has been grown.
A ork has been called Mamegi or Ubamegasi in Japanese.
Therefore it has been called Mamegi-Daishi.


The origin of the Name Mottoigi.

Once upon a time, Parsons who will be priest put a hair band on the branch after cutting off their hair.
A hair band as Japanese traditional item was called moto-yui. And tree has been called ki or gi in Japanese. Therefore it has been called Moto-yui-gi. After a while Moto-yui-gi changed to Mottoigi.
There is another opinion. Hair band was caught in the tree when travelers passed here.
